Yeehaw, I’m back!
I’ve been out and about a lot lately, which is a good thing, right?
The Fairy Godmother came to visit us this weekend.
I’ve been hanging out with my husband.
I’m trying to keep my teenage lovebirds as close to the nest as possible, but ah, that’s a whoolllle other blog, lemme tell ya. If you’ve got kids, just wait until they’ve found true love AND car keys. I wonder when he will discover that we’ve got a GPS on the phone AND the car?
So anyhow, back to my story.
Last week, I announced that I have decided to be a vegetarian.
Or, according to my friend Kelly, ‘I’m giving up meat,’ if that’s easier and so ya’ll don’t think I’ve just gone entirely crunchy granola on everyone.
It’s been a week now, and other than that devil of a meatball that I took one teeny bite of the first night, under some serious peer/meatball pressure, I haven’t had so much as a bite of chicken, or any other animal for that matter.
The meat part has been easy. Check. Done for now.
The processed food part? Ehhhh, not so easy.
Let’s just say that it’s a lot harder to become a processedfoodsataraian than it is a VEGETARIAN.
Trust me.
I am not a big sweets person, I could pass up 500 gallons of Blue Bell. In fact, if I did eat ice cream, I’d be set because I haven’t given up milk and life would be good.
But ice cream is not my thing. Cheez Its are. And chips. And salsa. And Wheat thins.
I knew at the outset, this would be my challenge. Years ago, I remember Susan Powter (ya’ll remember her? The blond exercise chick with the buzz cut?) saying that she gained 300 pounds by becoming a vegetarian, because all she ate was Ho-Hos.
Somehow, that stuck with me and I knew that I couldn’t give up meat, just so I could take up Ho-Hos. But damn those suckers sound good right now.
Anyhow, I digress.
I’ve done good with the meat, the packaged food has been a bit of a challenge, but even so, I’ve only eaten TWO, count ‘em TWO (I know trust me, I counted) Cheez Its, had a small bit of movie popcorn, and a few chips during our weekend cookout. That’s it. Not to bad, huh?
I’ve had a great vegetarian breakfast every day, and I’ve taken my lunch as well by packing that veggie sandwhich recipe that I stole from Panera Bread. I really haven’t missed much.
And, I can honestly, truly, 100% say that I absolutely do not feel at all deprived and I started to feel much better within 48 hours.
I definitely plan to continue this way of eating for now.
The jury is still out, though, on the dairy and egg products.
At first, I thought I was going to just continue to eat both products, and I have continued to eat small amounts of cheese, and the small amount of milk I drink, I replaced with soy. Choclate soy.
As for the eggs? Wellll, I was totally intent on keeping them. I DO eat a lot of eggs actually, I’ve been an egg eater for years.
That is, right up until I was looking for some vegetarian recipes and some website article was discussing the whole dairy/egg debate, and the author said, “some vegetarians choose not to eat eggs because they are an ovum.”
An ovum.
Thanks, dude.
Yeah, that did it for me.
I mean I guess in my head, that makes sense.
But, I dont’ want to think about an egg being an &*$%^#$%$% ovum anymore than I want to eat Head Cheese.
I’ve decided to give up ovums, ovaries (except my own,) and any other animal female organ by products for now.
An ovum.
And just to think.
For the past ten years, I’ve been eating an ovum on toast every damn morning for breakfast.
Stay tuned.
Tonight I’m making Tofu Buffalo Wings.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! tofu buffalo wings!!!!!! I think I will stay fat. I am proud for you though. What ever makes you feel good is what it is all about.(:
How are you going to mold the “buffalo wings” and take a pic of them for us all to see. (just curious)
Love and miss you,
CW
Shannon,
I didn’t think they allowed vegetarianism in Texas. Farmers in WI don’t like it much either!
Good luck!

Amy’s makes excellent frozen meals. Kashi is also a terrific brand. You really have to watch the Lean Cuisines and such, they sneak in chicken broth in a lot of their meals that look vegetarian. Ditto vegetable soup.
Good job! As I think about doing the veggie thing again…eggs have become my downfall…I like them to much now…but when you think about them as ovum…ick. That may have done it.
