Puppy Love.

Submitted by Shannon on November 20, 2009 – 11:44 pm9 Comments

I did something today that I didn’t think I would be doing for many months:

I brought home a new dog.

After losing Tank so unexpectedly last month, and with all of the things we have had happen lately, a puppy was not really on my agenda.

Funny how things happen.

Here is the ad that I saw. You tell me what you would have done.

More About Ella #2

My name is Ella and I was found chained with padlock to a tree in some people’s front yard with a sign that said “If this is your dog – take her. If you want this dog – take her.” Can you believe that? Luckily, a Pup Squad volunteer took me and wants to find me a good home! I am still a baby….Vet says I am 10 to 12 weeks old. I am only about 10 pounds now so I probably will be a medium size dog when I grow up. (small pumpkin in photo). My foster mom wants to add, “Ella has had her first set of vacinations and will be spayed before going to her new home. She is ready for her FOREVER HOME!! She may be a baby, but she is so smart. She walks great on a leash and is already kennel trained. So far…no accidents in the house!! She gets along great with other dogs and cats. (even if the silly cats won’t play with her) She loves to play and cuddle. Look at that little face…”

I found her photo out of nowhere last weekend, it almost jumped out and grabbed me. I mean, I really felt her looking at me saying, “I belong with you, come and get me.” It was a strange and unplanned but almost tangible feeling.

I contacted the rescue group, completed the application, and was told there were two other people ahead of me and that she was probably already adopted. I was actually okay with that because I just felt like if it was meant to be, it would happen.

About 18 hours later, I got the call that the other two people fell through. Imagine that.

A week later, she is in the crate next to my bed, after a bit of begging to come out and play which has now turned into sleep.

She is a ball of energy, hyper, a black blur for the moments I let go of the leash in the house.

Her ears are bigger than her head and stand straight up when she notices something. Like a squirrel. Which nearly resulted in me losing an arm. I’m glad she’s only 16 pounds.

As is typical for a German Shepherd, it’s obvious she’s smart. She takes her chew toy, chews on it, then flings her head and tosses it and goes to bring it back…she yes, she plays catch with herself. :)

Within about 15 minutes of being home, she figured out how to fling her head the OTHER way and in one swoop, come straight out of her collar. I had to send Tyler out in the rain for a new collar, otherwise I could not catch the black ball of fur speeding around my house.

I love dogs. There is something about a dog, even a jump-on-the-couch right into your lap, 16 pound puppy, that takes your mind off the world.

Dogs don’t care about your job. They don’t care about the traffic on the way home, the bills stacking up, the weekend workload.

They care about a walk and a friend and fun toys.

Here’s the photo I got tonight:

If you notice, there is a slight shadow? That was about all I could catch tonight. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Duh, I forgot to say her name! It’s Bella! Welcome Bella!

We miss Tank, his ashes are on the mantle, his spirit is with us. He would have had a ball with Ms. Bella.

And, even though she is a rescue dog, I think she might have really rescued me.
